What’s in a name?

  • The Blog — Writing by Ear
Some people play by ear. They can hear a melody and duplicate it, often without formal music training. I can’t play an instrument to save my life, but I’ve always been able to write. To write in a way that sounded right. Chalk it up to hours and hours of reading as a child. I didn’t have much formal training — great high school English teachers. (My college profs couldn’t hold a candle to them — I took the required 2 English courses as a freshman and never looked back.) But I’ve been writing for a living for more than 20 years. Some people play by ear; I write by ear — it’s the only way I’ve ever known how, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
